In class the last little while we’ve been studying the play & movie “Romeo & Juliet”. In the play and movie we’ve noticed some themes, so i am going to explain on 5 of the themes in the movie and play.

Uselessness of violence: I think what this theme means is that sometimes people hold a grudge on each other and fight, and have no reason to. So in my opinion that makes it useless to fight without really a reason. This was found in the play/movie Romeo and Juliet because the Capulet’s and Montague’s had a hate for each other and there was no reason or explanation why they didn’t like each other, so it was uselessness of violence. A specific example from the play/movie is at the beginning when Mercurico and Benvolio are at the gas station and Tybalt shows up too and start fighting and shooting at each other. This event relates to the theme “Uselessness of Violence” because the Montague’s and Capulet’s have no reason to hate each other and fight.

Generation gap between young & old: This theme is about the gap between a younger and older person and the different generations. It applies to the movie/play because Romeo is 21 and Juliet is 14. This refers throughout the whole play and movie because throughout the whole thing they stay the same age. It relates to the theme because their is a age gap between their ages!

The strength of young love: The meaning of this theme is young love can have a lot of strength and it can go a long way and it CAN last even if people say it never will, if you really love the person it’s possible. This applies in the movie/play because Romeo and Juliet fall in love and show their affection for each other. Romeo and Juliet showing they fall in love shows in the movie sorta at the beginning of the movie/play and continues throughout the whole play and movie. A part i thought showed strength of young love is when Romeo thinks Juliet is dead so he drinks poison so he can die with her and then Juliet shoots herself so she can be dead with Romeo. This relates to the theme because it’s showing what the strength of love can do, it can push you to do certain things, love is strong.

The dangers of dishonesty: The meaning of this theme i think is explaining if you lie/ not be honest it can often be dangerous and lead to bad things. In the play/movie when someone is dishonest it almost always ends up with a consequence or end up badly some how. This happened in the movie when Romeo wasn’t told Juliet was faking her death and he was lied too about her actually being dead. This lead to him killing himself because he didn’t know and it ending up badly. It relates to the theme because Romeo got lied to and the result ending badly which is the danger of dishonesty.

Revenge leads to destruction: The meaning of this theme would be i think getting revenge never really helps, it usually blows up in your face somehow. This was shown in the play/movie from the killing of Mercutio and Tybalt. It specifically happened when Tybalt killed Mercutio, then Romeo killed Tybalt to get revenge because Mercutio was apart of his family. But then Romeo found out he was related to Tybalt because Romeo and Juliet were married and he just killed his wives relative, so that blew up in Romeo’s face. It related to the theme because Romeo tried to get revenge and hurt Tybalt but in the end all he did was hurt his wife (Juliet) with heartbreak from losing a loved one caused by him.
